The ISP team of UMET (Pr Bernard Martel) and the INSERM unit U1008 (Pr Nicolas Blanchemain) of the University of Lille, in partnership with COUSIN SURGERY, are winners of the AAP Industrial Chair 2023.COUSIN SURGERY, located in the metropolis of Lille in Wervick-Sud, designs and markets implantable prostheses for visceral, orthopaedic and spinal surgeries. The REGFI Industrial Chair (Regenerating Fiber) will be co-financed by the European Metropolis of Lille (MEL) and the Excellence Initiative Université de Lille (ex-I-Site). REGFI will perpetuate for another three years a collaboration started in 2009 between the two Academic Laboratories and COUSIN SURGERY. Their joint research concerns the functionalization of textile implants in the surgical treatment of abdominal wall hernias. Previous work has already led to the development and market launch in 2024 of a hernia prosthesis (Cyclomesh®) targeting acute post-operative pain. The REGFI project will focus on 1) Developing innovative wall-reinforcing prostheses that are more suitable for the treatment of complex hernias in patients with comorbidities. We will target the inflammatory reaction for the activation and/or acceleration of biological processes of regeneration of the wall tissue. 2) To open up avenues of research into new absorbable biomaterials with a high potential for industrial exploitation for the manufacture of hernia prostheses, and 3) to develop the training of students "in and through research" for future professions in R&D and for technical and regulatory work in the field of implantable medical devices. The REGFI Industrial Chair will allow the hiring of a Research Engineer (3 years), the acquisition of new and more efficient equipment and will be accompanied by a CIFRE Thesis with the support of the ANRT.
